Yesterday saw a celebration of the 50th anniversery of human spaceflight (1961 saw astronaut Yuri Gagarin (of the former Soviet Union) become the first man to reach outer space), Google got in on the act with a themed wordmark on their homepage, while Google-owned video hosting site YouTube also got in on the special day.
Whilst a custom wordmark on its own might seem fitting, YouTube usually combine such short-term changes with some themed videos and features (as seen in their April Fool’s Day ‘YouTube 1911′ theme), and yesterday was no different, with the online premiere of feature-length film First Orbit. The movie serves as a recreation of Gagarin’s first 108-minute-long orbit of the Earth in 1961, complete with a recorded original radio conversation throughout the duration of the historic flight.
The producion company behind First Orbit were The Attic Room, who worked in association with the ISS (International Space Station) with the aim of gaining footage to show ‘a new view of what Yuri would have seen as he travelled around the planet’.
They described their work, and their opinions on the film: “Weaving these new views together with historic voice recordings from Yuri’s flight and an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, we have created a spellbinding film to share with people around the World on this historic anniversary.”
The video shows archived footage of Gagarin just before the launch, with his speech allowing the movie to merge into new footage, that is supposed to represent the exact route that was taken by the shuttle as Yuri describes it. The video seems to have gone down well thanks to its featured video spot on the homepage of YouTube, with the current viewcount currently listed at over 2.25M in just 24 hours of its upload.
The hosting of First Orbit might also be considered a good test of the public response to this type of content being featured on the website, with official feature-length films adding to the usual user-based content that is available to the world. Will YouTube continue to host high-rising efforts of movies, or would a foray into the offical movie business crash and burn?
The movie itself can be seen below in full (if you have 109 minutes to spare):

Is the long rumored Apple TV set coming out this year? Quite possibly yes according to reports. Apple already have ways to get content onto tv sets via Apple TV set-top box and the new iPad 2, that can be connected to TV sets. But the obvious progression is Apple producing it’s own HDTV set full of iTunes content, that will compete with both Google TV and Netflix.

It is the end of a video hosting era. If you have any videos stored at Google’s “Google Video” service, then maybe you should head over there and grab them. Google have decided to inform via email to users that it is closing down the video hosting service. Most users probably realise by now as Google has stopped taking video uploads for 2 of years now.

DirecTV have announced the launch of their new premium video-on-demand service for new movies (from producers Fox, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros.) for subscribers. The service was rumored back in April, but many thought it may have been an April Fool’s prank.
But it begins with the relase of Just Go With It on Tuesday, allowing DirectTV subscribers (who owns an official HD-DVR recorder), to have purchase a 48-hour download rental (before removal from the hard drive) of a movie (in 1080p and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound) all for the meager fee of $29.99.

The Blackberry Playbook tablet has not been that well received, but it had a saving grace. It could access Hulu streaming. But now Playbook owners have had it taken away. The tablet won’t be able to access the full web anymore well not if Hulu has anything to do with it.

After the Blockbuster buyout by Dish Network, many were wondering why they wanted the failed DVD by mail company. It seems that the answer is the streaming side of the business, the web streaming licensing deals and the 20 million plus Netflix subscribers.
The thorny issue of subscribers ‘cutting the cord‘ has been raised before and quickly shot down again. Usually by the cable companies themselves. However a new report from In-Stat research shows that internet tv could convince 30% of US homes to become cord cutters.
