3D glasses cool or just plain silly?

I have always maintained that the biggest problem with 3DTV is the ridiculous glasses you have to wear. It does nothing for your street cred and although i can handle sitting in a darkened cinema. Having a visitor at home whilst i wear the silly specs is not a good look for me.

The manufacturers appear to agree, and according to the Daily Yomiuri, Toshiba are producing a ‘glasses free’ – 3D technology for release by the end of the year. Although the way this will work is still unclear, it appears that Toshiba will use a technology known as autosterescopic 3D. This involves all kinds of technical terms such as parallax barrier, lenticular, volumetric, electro-holographic, and light field displays. But to the common man, it translates to each eye being shown different images by tracking where the viewers eyes are!

3DTV is having a hard time lately with director James Cameron advising viewers to hold off from buying a 3D set and internet connected tv becoming more popular than 3DTV. It is beleived that Toshiba are releasing 3 models before christmas from around the $1200 pricepoint. The new 3DTV’s could help with the current lacklustre sales of 3DTV which may be down to silly glasses or the fact that there is not much 3D content around. It is widely thought that 3D will not hit the mass market until the sets sell for less than $1000 anyway.

Virgin Media are calling for a new investigation into Project Canvas, after Channel Five rejoined the internet TV venture. The new on demand TV service that might replace Freeview, is facing more criticism as Virgin Media calls for telecoms regulator Ofcom to investigate after Channel Five re-joins the development.

When launched, Project Canvas will allow UK viewers to watch catch-up TV on services such as the BBC iPlayer and 4oD, as well as the standard TV channels, via an internet ready set top box or tv set.

Project Canvas is being developed by the BBC and other partners ITV, Channel 4, BT, TalkTalk, Arqiva and now Channel Five, and could launch on set top boxes in early 2011, bringing

X Factor To Cut Off Auto-Tune

X Factor bosses have now outlawed the use of voice enhancement techniques, commonly known as auto-tune, to improve participants’ performances, after show creator and judge Simon Cowell announced his shock and anger at the revelations.

It follows a public backlash after it was revealed that the opening show of the current series saw some singers’ voices improved by the technology, also known as auto-tune, with unsuspecting targeted performances including the star of last weekend’s show, Gamu Nhenghu. A spokeswoman claimed: “There will be no auto-tune in the audition shows or for competitive performances on live shows”.

Earlier this week, TV bosses had insisted that they only used the technology during auditions in order to remove any unwanted background noise. Auto-tune has become a common tool throughout the music industry and is now often used to create a robot-like effect on a singer’s voice. The move to ban the technology will be a relief to American fans of the hit show, which is set to launch a USA X Factor version in 2011.

Over 11.1million people watched the opening episode on Saturday, while series 7 of the X Factor as a whole will run until December.

The first episode saw a good selection of the usual mix of promising talents and oddball no-hopers, with the pick of the action coming from the bizarre (but successful) antics of Shirlina Johnson, with no description seeming to do her song justice, so please take this opportunity to enjoy her performance below:

Netflix bring the big screen to the little screen

Netflix has released an application for the iPhone and iPod which allows you to stream TV Shows and Movies to your portable device.

The official Netflix Blog Says: “Jamie Odell, director of product management, here. We hinted at a free Netflix App for the iPhone and iPod touch in April, announced it in June and I’m happy to share that it is available now!”

The Netflix Blog Continues: “If you want to instantly watch TV episodes and movies on your iPhone or iPod touch, all you need to do is get the free Netflix App from the App Store at http://iTunes.com/apps/netflix and have a Netflix membership starting at $8.99 a month. What’s the first thing you’ll watch via your iPhone or iPod touch.”

The good points going for this application are:

Seamless playback across multiple devices: You can start watching a movie or television show on your computer or another device that streams Netflix and at whatever point you stop what you are watching, you can resume where you left off on the iPhone application.Playback available on WIFI or 3G: You can watch media from Netflix using AT&T’s 3G connection or a WIFI connection.Modify your Netflix Queue: You can add movies to your Netflix Instant Queue from the iPhone app.

The biggest drawback unfortunately is the actual playback of the media from Netflix. Playback was very choppy for me. I tested this on an iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4G. I tried playing a few different TV shows and movies using AT&Ts 3G connection and 2 different WIFI networks and had problems with the media wanting to loop back a few seconds a few times each time.

Hulu’s Hulu Plus is a service that streams television shows for $10 a month to various devices including the iPhone. Playback on the Hulu application has been flawless.

While the Hulu selection of movies is not that great compared to Netflix, if you are mostly interested in watching television shows on your iPhone, then the Hulu app is a good choice over the Netflix app.

Hulu Plus is currently only available by invite, but you can request an invitation from Hulu.

The future of Internet-enabled TV is set to be influenced by Silicon Valley and they will help shape the future of TV in pretty much the same way as it came to influence the latest crop of smartphones.

As phones became much more sophisticated and added computer like capabilities, the industry strayed into the area of expertise of Valley companies. Apple developed the iPhone, Palm introduced the Pre and Google has pushed out its very successful Android operating system.

Televisions and set-top boxes are now adding similar features with powerful processors, fast video chips and more sophisticated operating systems and interfaces.

The silicon content of TVs has grown quite dramatically since the switch from analogue TVs with cathode ray tubes to flat LCD panels serving digital content.

Many are now backlit by LEDs, lighting which is made of and driven by silicon chips.

The iSuppli research firm sees internet-enabled televisions giving a major boost to silicon chipmakers, with networking semiconductors, TV systems on a chip (SoCs) and more memory needed.

It predicts a compound annual growth rate for video decoding chips, DRAM memory chips and Wi-Fi integrated circuits in internet TVs of more than 55 per cent, creating a $2bn market by 2014.

The central and graphics processors (CPUs and GPUs) of Valley companies Intel and Nvidia are likely to be used extensively to deliver video and web services.

Intel said in a meeting in May: “It was struggling to cope with demand for its latest Atom chip. It was faced with an order backlog of more than 1m units, and customers including France Telecom and Telecom Italia waiting to put the chip in their set-top boxes.”

Paul Otellini, chief executive, said then that “the biggest revolution since television went from black and white to colour was about to take place.”

Eric Kim, who was then head of its Digital Home group added:

Rent movies from Youtube

Youtube have in the past been experimenting in pay-per-view services in a small way, but now it appears they are ready to get serious. Owner,  Google are said to be in discussions with film studios to offer streaming movies a’la Netflix.

The report in the Financial Times reports that Google are aiming for a pricepoint of $5 per movie. The aim is to start in the US and then rollout the service worldwide.

The online movie and TV market is vibrant at this time with Netflix expanding their streaming movie service after striking a deal with major Hollywood studios. Apple are preparing to launch Apple TV with 99-cent television show rentals, So Google see this as a good time to ramp up their involvment.

Google have long been preparing to enter the pay per view market and have already experimented with pay per view movies in a small way. And it has the potential with its enormous traffic to take over the market.

Youtube traffic is what would appeal to any movie distributor as YouTube has traffic that Hulu can only dream of.  With a growth of more than 6% during the last three months alone. Compare this to Hulu who had a 0.9% rise in the same period.

The move along with Google TV means they can offer a mix of services from free tv up to the paid content that makes the big profits. Google TV has already received resistance from tv broadcasters because they do not see any revenue coming from Google’s Smart TV.

Project Canvas is coming

The local TV group Six TV, will formally this week request an Ofcom investigation of the Project Canvas online venture, stating that its likley to be a “poison pill” for the regional broadcasters.

Virgin Media has already complained to Ofcom, which sees Project Canvas as an anti competitive cartel that will crush the nascent online TV market. Later this year Ofcom is expected to make a decision on whether to scrutinise Project Canvas, the joint venture that also includes TalkTalk, BT, Arqiva, Channel 4 and ITV. Orange and Channel 5 are also looking to get involved.

Amazon want in on subscription tv

Amazon, famous for book sales more than anything else are looking to enter the subscription tv and movie market according to reports. Reported in the Wall Street Journal, the service which would give Amazon customers unlimited streaming of television shows and movies across the internet, is seen as a direct attack on the Netflix and Hulu Plus services.

After seeing the rapid growth of Netflix and Hulu’s new subscription service and Apple preparing to get serious about online streaming, Amazon want in on the emerging online tv market.

Amazon do have an existing video-on-demand service based on a pay-per-view basis. However, the proposed subscription deal will give viewers unlimited access to streaming for a fixed monthly price. It is believed that the service would be available on pc and a range of other devices such as the internet connected tv, smartphones and games consoles.

It is said that Amazon have been in talks with media companies including Time Warner, CBS, NBC and Viacom although results of the talks are still unclear. It is thought that like the Netflix streaming service, the majority of TV shows and movies would be aged, as the tv companies are wary of devaluing their content. The existing pay-per-view Amazon streaming service supplies a variety TV shows and movies for around $1.99 each.

How Amazon would charge for the service is unclear, although reports say they may bundle the service with its existing $79 per year Amazon Prime service, giving an instant large subscriber base. Prime gives members free 2-day shipping on Amazon products.

The deal would be a good fit as Amazon are a massive retailer with a household name. They have existing relationships with many media companies. They have an existing streaming set-up and from the side of the tv and movie companies. They are seriously looking at striking online deals as a way to increase revenue and reduce piracy.

New Apple TV small and cheap

After a successful takeover of the entire music world, Apple now have the internet tv market in its sights. Promising 99-cent shows followed by $4.99 movies, Apple launched the new mini black box on Wednesday. Around a quarter the size of the current Apple TV and promising to give viewers what they want, top Hollywood content without the fuss.

Other than being a lot smaller, the new Apple TV ditches the hard drive in favor of supplying streaming to paying viewers for a 48-hour period. The price is a major reduction from the previous $2.99 per show as is the hardware.

The old Apple TV was accurately described by Steve Jobs as “never being a hit”. The new Apple TV shows content in HD and has built-in Wi-Fi. The price is $99, down from $229 for the original box.

The device has an HDMI connector to hook it into a high-definition television. It has no storage; all offerings coming from iTunes will be delivered via the Internet.
, but it seems not all tv networks are keen on the idea.

Only ABC and FOX will allow Apple to sell the cheap TV shows from the iTunes store, although it would be expected that others will follow. However, most Hollywood studios and the big networks CBS and NBC have so far decided to not allow their content to be used.

It seems some tv companies beleive that the cheap streaming rentals could undermine the economics that underwrite the cost of creating expensive television shows. “We believe it would be shortsighted for the studios to devalue their product and enhance Apple’s power over the electronic distribution of their content,” Alan Gould, an analyst with Evercore Partners, wrote in a note to investors.

Apple Chief Steve Jobs acknowledged that many providers were not aboard. “Not all of them wanted to take this step with us,” Jobs said. “We think the other studios will see the light.”

For movies the outlook is better with more than 7,000 Hollywood movies (over 3,400 in HD) available for streaming and most new releases will be made available the same day they are released on DVD.

A big plus for Apple is the inclusion of Netflix on their box and the device is controllable remotely via the free Remote app running on the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Other neat feature include being able to wirelessly send media content from movies to music and pictures from PC, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, thanks to the new AirPlay functionality that’s coming to iDevices via the iOS 4.2 upgrade in November.

This functionality brings the movies anywhere concept into reality, allowing viewers to watch a rented title on the Apple TV set-top box then transfer to iphone or ipad when on the move.

Apple TV will be shipping in around four weeks. Read more about the product by visiting Apple.

Fans of the hit US TV show Lost have an opportunity to watch the entire running of the show, from start-to-finish in a special marathon screening a week on Monday, although they will have to take at least half a week from their working/leisure schedule to manage the feat.

Lost producers have praised the efforts of the devoted UK viewers who are planning to attend a four-day marathon, watching each of the series’ 121 episodes back-to-back, but at the same time insisted that they will take no responsibility for the participant’s health and well-being in this act of crazed fandom.

Devoted followers of the smash-hit cult TV series – co-created by JJ Abrams and starring actors such as Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly – are being given an open invitation to the first ever public Lost marathon, held at the Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square from Monday September 13 to Thursday September 16.

The show features the lives of a group of people who survived the crash of a commercial plane flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific. More details from Wikipedia.

Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, who were Executive Producers on the show, stated: “For those of you watching all six seasons of the show in one long marathon, we applaud you, we admire you and we thank you for your fandom. But we take no legal responsibility for you!”

Only the first 280 fans through the doors of the cinema will be eligible to take part in the marathon, watching over 80 hours of the gripping drama, to celebrate the release of ‘Lost - The Final Season’ on Blu-ray and DVD. Fans are encouraged to take part dressed as their favourite characters from the show, and as a safety measure, also armed with their very own ‘survival packs’ including sleeping bags, pillows and packed lunches. A Lost goody bag full of merchandise will be awarded to each participant who attends the event, which begins at 10am on Monday September 13.

Gregory Lynn, director of The Prince Charles Cinema said: “We’re thrilled to host such an exciting event and look forward to keeping our cinema running all day and all night for as long as it takes!”

As an added safety measure, Paramedics will be on standby and regulated breaks will be arranged at intervals as fans attempt to complete the unprecedented mass participation event, and with over 5000 minutes (or over 84 hours) of total viewing action, they are probably going to need it, with many possibly taking days off work to accommodate the marathon.

It is not the first time that a marathon such as this has been attempted, as fans of shows all over the world will try and watch their favourites as part of a record attempt or just for fun, but it has rarely been attempted as a public event. Could a successful screening of Lost pave the way for other public marathons?

Sony to rival itunes?

Sony have announced the launch of a new video and music streaming service that will put the company in direct competition with itunes and netflix. Announced on Wednesday at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) trade show in Berlin and due for release in the US and Europe this fall, the service called Qriocity will allow streaming movies and tv shows on PlayStation 3, internet enabled tv sets, media players, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and of course computers.

Qriocity was announced last year, under the name of Sony Online Services. Besides music and movies, it will also be used to distribute games and e-books, according to Sony.

CEO of Sony,Howard Stringer said that Sony Internet TV will revolutionize the television experience and will be the world’s first true Internet service allowing viewers to simultaneously search and access all of their TV channels as well as internet based tv apps from wherever they watch TV, he said.also hinted at IFA at an upcoming TV service based on Google’s Android-based TV platform, plans for which were announced earlier this year.

Amazon vod getting cheaper thanks to Apple?

Amazon fresh from announcing an online tv subscription service, are now reportedly selling tv shows for an Apple beating 99 cents per show to own. Viewers can already buy a selection of movies and tv shows from the Amazon on demand store for $1.99 plus, but it now appears Amazon are cutting that figure in half.

The move follows shortly after Apple unveiled a revamped Apple TV box that supplies online rentals for 99 cents. It was not immediately clear whether Amazon had reached a new deal with Fox owner News Corp or ABC parent Walt Disney Co to cut its prices.

Amazon have been in talks with media companies proposing a subscription service that will give viewers unlimited access to TV shows and movies via the web,  as do other online rental companies such as Netflix. They join other big name players such as Microsoft, Apple, Google and Sony who have been strategising how to get a big part of the online streaming battle.

A big plus point for the service is the fact that shows downloaded from Amazon will not be restricted to a single manufacturers product. Companies like Apple and Sony are proposing online services that restrict viewers to using their own hardware.

Amazon Video on Demand can be viewed on a bigger selection of hardware including internet connected television from all the big manufacturers, plus Roku and TiVo set-top boxes.

It looks like the online rental market is going to get hot, and some great deals are to be had for the viewer.
